Slice through those sickies!
(Managing Absenteeism)

If absenteeism is a concern for your organisation there are many ways in which we can help you. One of these ways is to give first line managers the skills to tackle the much dreaded `return to work` interview which has had proven results as a method of `managing` absenteeism. The two extremes are that the interview can be ignored or carried out so poorly that the next thing is more prolonged sick leave and even a case for harassment!

A suggested outline

  • Identify your major concerns regarding tackling absenteeism
  • Manage these concerns more effectively
  • Gain rapport and work towards getting the `right` climate in order to carry out return to work interviews
  • Plan and prepare yourself practically and psychologically for maximum success
  • Identify some optional strategies for gaining agreement and commitment
  • Highlight where being assertive is the correct strategy
  • Build up your own confidence when tackling awkward/delicate situations
  • Handle disagreement, conflict and emotion professionally, assertively and with sensitivity
  • Ensure that your proposed course of action conforms with your organisation's policies and procedures
  • Deal with those difficult interviews in a manner which leaves the staff member feeling valued
